PATIENT INFORMATION

Your first visit - A consultation

Your first office visit will allow Dr. Nider the opportunity to complete an initial examination. After reviewing your health and dental history, a comprehensive examination of the facial structures, jaws, teeth and gums will be conducted to determine if treatment is indicated at this time. Dr. Nider will discuss a preliminary diagnosis of your bite and tooth alignment and discuss what orthodontic option may be best for you.

If treatment is necessary, we will explain our recommendations for future appointments. If it is determined that treatment is not needed at this time because we need to wait for further growth or tooth eruption, you will be placed in our recall system. Dr. Nider will continue to see you for regular visits to monitor growth and tooth eruption as well as to make any future recommendations for orthodontic treatment.

Diagnostic Records

If treatment is recommended, an appointment to take diagnostic records is arranged. This allows Dr. Nider to determine the best treatment plan for you. Complete diagnostic records typically include plaster study models of the teeth, photos of the patient's face and teeth, and two orthodontic x-rays. This information is used to develop a custom treatment plan for each patient. These records are also helpful in tracking the progress of your orthodontic treatment.

Case Presentation

After your records have been analyzed, you will meet with Dr. Nider to discuss your treatment in detail, including all associated costs. This case presentation appointment typically occurs three to four weeks after the diagnostic records are completed. At the case presentation appointment, Dr. Nider will give you a written comprehensive outline of your treatment plan. He is also happy to answer any questions you may have about your orthodontic treatment.

Regular Appointments

The appointment to place your appliances (braces, appliances, etc.) can vary from 15 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the type of appliance being placed. You will then see us at regular intervals for an "adjustment", which can vary from 15 to 30 minutes. We make every effort to be on time for our patients, and ask that you extend the same courtesy to us. If you cannot keep an appointment, please notify us immediately and cancel only if it is an emergency. It may be difficult to find alternate times to reschedule appointments since most appointments are made 5-8 weeks in advance.

FEES

Cost

The cost of treatment depends on the severity of the patient's problem. Fees and payment options will be discussed prior to the start of treatment. We work hard to make orthodontics affordable and have established the following financial policies:

  • Financial arrangements and payment plans can be made to extend your payments over the estimated treatment time. The payment plan is interest-free.

  • Arrangements for payment plans require post-dated cheques or authorization to debit a credit card on either the 1st or 15th of every month.

  • For your convenience, we accept payment by cash, VISA, MASTERCARD and Interac/debit

Insurance

If you have a dental insurance plan that provides coverage for orthodontic services, please review the specifics of your plan for information on the amount of coverage available. Insurance guidelines developed by the Canadian Association of Orthodontists require that payments be received directly from our patients.

We are happy to assist you in completing the necessary insurance forms for your claim to be reimbursed directly from your insurance company. We are also happy to send in all paperwork to your insurance company on your behalf.

Tax Relief

Specialty orthodontic fees may qualify to be claimed on your income tax as a medical expense. Please consult your tax accountant for further detail.

RETAINERS

Congratulations on your new smile. Please follow the instructions below to help keep your beautiful new smile.

  • Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise.
  • Take your retainers out when eating and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost at school or restaurants.)
  • Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque, and eliminates odors.
  • When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Pets love to chew on them!
  • Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to them faster.
  • Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken call us immediately.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your retainers, or your retainers need adjusting, please call our office to schedule an appointment.
  • Always bring your retainers to your appointments.
  • Retainer replacement is expensive. With proper care they will last for years!
  • Remove retainers while playing any active sport or swimming. A mouthguard should always be worn while playing active sports.
  • Keep retainers away from hot water, car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.
